GADANSU Engages Ga and Dangme Unposted Teachers to Discuss Challenges and Opportunities
On 4th July 2024, the GaDangme National Students’ Union (GADANSU) held a strategic engagement meeting with unposted Ga and Dangme trained teachers as part of its ongoing effort to support the preservation and advancement of GaDangme language education.
The meeting, held in Dodowa, served as an important platform for the teachers to share their concerns, professional challenges, and perspectives regarding language education and employment gaps within basic schools across GaDangme communities. Many of the teachers expressed frustration with delayed postings and the limited number of GaDangme language teaching opportunities despite completing formal training and certification.
The leadership of GADANSU noted that the engagement was necessary to better understand existing barriers and identify ways to support both the teachers and the broader advocacy for GaDangme language inclusion in schools.
Speaking at the session, the President of GADANSU stated:
“We can not strengthen GaDangme language education if the very people trained to teach the language remain unposted and underutilized. This meeting is the beginning of a more structured approach to advocacy, partnership, and opportunity creation.”
The discussions covered key issues, including:
The shortage of Ga and Dangme language teachers in public schools
The need for stronger policy enforcement on local language instruction
Opportunities through community-led and volunteer-based teaching models
Aligning trained GaDangme teachers with emerging educational initiatives
The engagement also highlighted GADANSU’s commitment to fostering collaboration among educators, traditional authorities, stakeholders in education, and policymakers to promote GaDangme language, culture, and identity.
Participants welcomed the initiative and described the meeting as timely, motivating, and necessary for collective action.
The Union confirmed that follow-up engagements will be held to develop a coordinated framework that supports teacher placement, language promotion, and the sustainability of GaDangme educational development.
